Scotland’s Western Cairngorms offer some of the most stunning wildlife viewing opportunities in the Highlands, and staying at Netherwood House places you at the ideal location for an unforgettable nature experience at Glen Feshie and beyond. Our accommodation in the heart of Kingussie, is just 15-25 minutes from one of Scotland’s most remarkable landscapes, where ancient forests meet glens, and wildlife thrives in its natural habitat.
The Glen Feshie Experience
Glen Feshie wildlife watching begins with one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens, which has been recognised as a conservation success story. This stunning valley has been carefully maintained, allowing the ancient Caledonian pine forests to regenerate naturally. The result is a landscape that feels both timeless and vibrantly alive, and offers visitors the chance to experience Scotland as it once was across the vast area of the Highlands.

The glen provides walking routes for every ability level, from gentle riverside walks on the Western Cairngorms which is perfect for families, to more challenging hikes that take you deep into the hills where golden eagles soar overhead. The variety of habitats – from riverine woodlands to high moorland – create the perfect condition for diverse wildlife populations to flourish.
Wildlife Encounters Await
The wildlife viewing opportunities around Glen Feshie are fantastic. Spring and summer bring the return of ospreys, which fish in the nearby lochs including Loch Insh and Loch Garten. These impressive birds of prey, which have distinctive white heads and dark eye stripes, provide great entertainment and picture opportunites as they dive to catch fish.
Golden eagles are among the most sought-after birds of prey to sight in the area. They fly over the moorlands and high corries of Glen Feshie, and the surrounding remote glens. While white-tailed eagles are occasionally spotted, they remain rarer in these inland areas compared to Scotland’s west coast.
More commonly seen in the area are raptors that include buzzards, kestrels and peregrine falcons, who all regularly hunt over the open ground. Their presence indicates that there is a healthy ecosystem that supports these species throughout the Cairngorms National Park area.
Mammals of the Highlands
The glen is well-known for its Scottish red deer populations – they are the UK’s largest land mammal. These wonderful animals are often spotted on the hillsides and in the glens, particularly during the early morning or evening when they’re most active. The more elusive roe deer tend to favour woodland areas, and they require patient observation to spot them.
Red squirrels thrive in the Caledonian pine forests of Rothiemurchus, Glen Feshie and Inshriach. These squirrels have found sanctuary within these woodlands and they can often be seen gathering pine cones or racing through the canopy.
Along the rivers and lochs, particularly the River Spey and its tributaries, otters can be spotted by keen-eyed visitors. These playful mammals are most active during dawn and dusk, making early morning or evening walks particularly rewarding.
Pine martens, although they are primarily nocturnal, are sometimes seen at feeding stations around the area. These cat-sized mammals are members of the weasel family and are excellent climbers.
For those hoping to spot the elusive Scottish wildcat – one of Britain’s rarest mammals – the Highland Wildlife Park which is near to Kingussie offers the best opportunity, as wild sightings are extraordinarily rare.
